Selected by the jury for the “Diptych / Triptych” show, February 2026.
These are three images of the stone walls protecting the sanctuary at Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau, a sacred place of refuge on Hawaiʻi Island. A single white stone sits on a wall of black lava. Was this an offering to the spirit of this site, a gesture of peace, or just a random act of nature? Built centuries ago, these walls were constructed without mortar, each lava rock placed by hand, a structure that once offered safety, forgiveness, and peace.
